Why the age for Alcohol and Firearms in the United States should be 21 instead of 18? Between 1969 and 1976, 30 states in the United States lowered their minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) from 21 to 18. This change was primarily in response to the passage of the 26th Amendment which lowered the voting age from 21 to 18 in 1971. Public Safety Concerns the primary reason for raising the drinking age back to 21 was to reduce alcohol-related traffic fatalities among young people. Studies have shown a correlation between lower drinking ages and increased traffic accidents and fatalities. Shortly after that period, Congress passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act in 1984, requiring states to raise their MLDA back to 21 by October 1986 or risk losing federal highway funds. By 1988, all 50 States and the District of Columbia had complied with the age 21 minimum mandate. In December of 1979, I was in my senior year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison when I found myself on the beach in Fort Lauderdale for Winter Break. The women were running around half naked and I thought I’d died, gone to heaven, and stayed. That’s what I tell everybody. I decided to take a short break and got a job as an electrician’s helper. ( thanks to a State-sponsored pre-apprenticeship program.) I enjoyed it so much that I went through the apprenticeship program and got my Florida Journeyman Electrician License. I remember thinking about my gun collection in Wisconsin. (February 1980) In Florida's Big Cities, the only thing guns are good for is to shoot people. I gave all my guns to my brothers in Wisconsin. Back then I had a 35MM SLR Nikon, a portable dark room, and shot everything with a camera. For you young people, what is a dark room?
